Why I Became an Immigration Adviser: Bringing Back the Human Touch
The best part of my nearly 20 years working in immigration? Pressing that button, greeting someone at my desk, and asking: "How can I help?"
Every story was unique. Nervous applicants would sit down, anxious and uncertain about their future, and I'd watch them transform as we talked through their options. I was always fascinated by their answers to: Why New Zealand?
Watching someone walk away with that important visa label in their passport, ready to fulfil their dreams—that never got old. But the absolute best moments were letting people know they had been granted residence. The relief, the tears, the gratitude. Sometimes I wanted to say, "Thank you for choosing us out of every country in the world."
My Journey Through Immigration
I began my immigration career in 1998 at NZ Immigration Partners (formally Malcolm Pacific) one of New Zealand's first established consultancy firms. Those early days taught me the importance of personalised, client-focused service—really taking the time to understand each person's unique circumstances and goals.
In 2006, I joined Immigration New Zealand as an Immigration Officer. Over the years, I had the privilege of working in some of New Zealand's key offshore offices, including Shanghai, Singapore, and Bangkok. Back in New Zealand, I led teams in Wellington and Palmerston North, where I was responsible for the office processing over 70,000 student and visitor visa applications annually.
Throughout my Immigration New Zealand career, I approved hundreds of residence and temporary applications. I worked with people from every corner of the world, each with their own dreams of building a better life in New Zealand.
Why I Started Jade Immigration Advisers
After nearly two decades in the field, I realised I wanted to return to what I loved most about those early days: the personal connection. Working directly with individuals and families, understanding their dreams, and guiding them through every step of their immigration journey.
In 2020, I made the move to Tauranga—a decision I've never regretted. My friend Lucy had a simple pitch: "Come to Tauranga. It's warm, and you can walk the beach every day without being blown to the South Island." She was right on both counts.
While working as a Financial Adviser (another passion of mine—helping people invest in their futures), I kept encountering people who needed immigration advice. Friends would share their immigration stories, and I'd find myself wanting to help in a more meaningful way. A friend remembered when 'Katy' from Immigration New Zealand, London told her that her family had been granted residence and they could start their new life in New Zealand. It made me wonder how many people remembered my name when I approved their visas.
After three years of part-time study, I became a Licensed Immigration Adviser in 2025. Now I run Jade Immigration Advisers alongside my financial advice work—one of only a handful doing both. This unique combination means I can help you not just with your visa, but also with planning your financial future once you're settled in New Zealand.
What Makes My Approach Different
My nearly 20 years inside the immigration system gives me insights that few advisers have. I know exactly what immigration officers look for in applications because I was one. I understand how decisions are made, what raises concerns, and what makes a strong case.
But more importantly, I remember what it's like to be on the other side of that desk. I remember the anxiety, the hope, the life-changing nature of those decisions. Your case isn't just an application number to me—it's your future, your family's future, your dreams.
I work with sophisticated clients who have researched their options and know what they want. My role is to guide you through the complexities, ensure your application is as strong as possible, and give you confidence throughout the process.
Why This Matters for You
When you work with me, you get:
Personal attention: You work directly with me throughout your entire journey—no case managers, no junior staff passing messages back and forth.
Honest advice: I'll tell you upfront if your case has challenges and work with you to address them. I won't take on cases I don't believe I can help with.
Comprehensive support: From your initial inquiry through to approval (and even settlement advice afterward), I'm with you every step of the way.
Moving Forward
Whether you're considering New Zealand for work, looking to bring your family here, or ready to make this country your permanent home, I'm here to help make that happen.
I understand that behind every visa application is a person with hopes, dreams, and often significant life decisions at stake. That's why I'm committed to providing not just excellent technical advice, but also the personal support and understanding you deserve.
